WordPress (WP) or Wix? Many people who want to start a website are faced with this choice. You hear that many use WordPress, but others recommend Wix.com, an online content management system (C.M.S.) that allows you to create websites for free, without programming. To answer the question which of the two content management systems is better, we compare WordPress.org and Wix.com in this article. We emphasize that, in this post, we are NOT comparing WordPress.com, we compare WordPress.org. The pros and cons of both WordPress and Wix can be found below to make your choice easier.

What is better WordPress or Wix?

Whether you choose WordPress or Wix depends entirely on what you want to achieve with your website. Let’s look at the difference between the two, using different criteria. After that, you may be able to make a good choice to build your website.

Popularity numbers.

Currently Wix runs approximately 160,000,000 websites worldwide. WordPress is used by about 455,000,000 websites. Now you can already guess in which direction this post will go. So, WP is by far the most popular C.M.S.

Pricing.

The content management systems of both WordPress and Wix can be used for free. You can download WordPress for free and then upload it to your web hosting account. You can also register for free at Wix. But the disadvantage is that you get a website with advertising. There is a button to Wix.com at the top and bottom of the website. For example, if you want your own house style, it is not recommended. If you don’t want advertising, you have to switch to a paid variant. Depending on the features you want, you pay from $ 4.50 per month. WordPress is also free, and it allows you to add many more features. There are no ads. However, you have to purchase a subscription with a hosting provider for WordPress. You can often arrange cheap hosting for a few dollars a month.

User friendliness.

Immediately a big plus for Wix: it is more user-friendly than WordPress. You are guided through a menu to build a website in a few minutes. I tested it and this is how it works:

1. Log in to Wix.
You enter your email and password and have access.

2. Choose website.
You get an overview of what kind of website you want to build. Make your choice.

3. Select template.
You can choose from different templates for your site. You can set this with the click of a button.

4. Use editor.
Then you can fill in the website according to your own wishes with the editor of Wix.

5. Publishing.
Finally, you can publish your website.

So it’s a piece of cake. I have to say that it’s very user-friendly. Most of the time is spent on adding photos and text. The Wix editor is also easily accessible. You can easily edit text in the existing layout or remove and add photos again.

WordPress is a bit trickier to install and use. You have to download it first, then install it and then add plugins. However, nowadays installing WordPress is getting easier. Most hosting companies now offer a WordPress hosting application. This means that a one click installation button will be available to you after which you can immediately start building your site. WP wants to be accessible to everyone and its mission is to become increasingly user-friendly.

Flexibility.

WordPress is more flexible than Wix, that’s for sure. The C.M.S. allows you to build almost any website you want. The big advantage of WordPress is that you can add unlimited plugins to add more functions to the website. There are over 55,000 plugins in the official WordPress plugin repository. The most popular ones are related to S.E.O., security, image optimization, affiliate programs, content, and website speed. If you learn to build a WordPress website yourself, a world will open up for you. And, after working with it for a while, it will also become easier to build and extend your online presence. But of course you can also leave the work to a web designer if you want.

Design.

Wix has hundreds of fixed templates to choose from. For sure there is always one that appeals to you. But … you cannot create a custom website with Wix. You are bound by the options they offer. And options for editing the layout are limited. With WP however, you will be able to create a completely customized site if preferred. WordPress also has templates (themes) you can choose from, such as on Theme Forest. These templates have more flexibility and you can adjust them all. But you can also build a website from scratch and completely customize it to your own layout and appearance.

SEO.

WordPress is highly regarded by search engines such as Google as a content management system. Wix isn’t. We therefore assume that WP sites generally rank higher than Wix sites with similar content that have approximately the same number of search engine optimization points as the WP sites. In addition, there are many possibilities to improve the findability in the search results (S.E.O.) even more. There is, for example, the Yoast S.E.O. plugin with which you can manually optimize the entire website, but also every individual page or message. Wix websites can also be optimized for the search engines, but only to a limited extent. You will never be able to win from a well-optimized website built with WordPress.

Security.

An important part of any site is security. You can secure WordPress in many ways. But you have to do it yourself. You’ll need to install plugins and set their options. WP themes and plugins are also sometimes susceptible to a hack, allowing malicious parties to enter or even take over your website. But, if you take the right precautions, the chances of your site being hacked can be considered slim.

Wix however, has invented a firmly closed and fire walled system providing a strong security layer around sites. It is almost impossible to break this protection. That’s why you hardly ever hear that a Wix site has been hacked. WP sites on the other hand, are hacked often.

What is better Wix or WordPress?

If you need a tailor-made website, the choice is easy and you’d better use WordPress. But if you don’t want too much hassle and you don’t have high demands on findability, then Wix is the better option. Choosing WordPress or Wix, it is an important decision to think about. You are probably stuck to the website for several years or maybe even lifelong and it’s therefore important to think carefully about your choice. Also, it’s not easy to quickly switch from Wix to WordPress (or vice versa); often you will have to build your website from scratch again. I hope I was able to make the choice between WordPress or WIX easier. My personal preference is WP. It simply offers more possibilities if you want to grow further on a personal level and/or with your company. If you would like to know more on this subject you can also take a look at this page.
