What is Amazon Prime and is it worth it?

Amazon, who doesn’t know it? The largest e-commerce company in the world. But what is Amazon Prime? Their slogan is “the best of shopping and entertainment!”. Hmm, doesn’t sound bad, does it? I have an Amazon Prime subscription and am happy to tell you everything you need to know about this unique service.

It is hard to imagine that there are internet users who have never heard of Amazon, but let me explain it just to be sure. Amazon was founded in 1994 and has since grown into the largest e-commerce company in the world. In the early years, Amazon only sold books online, but nowadays the offer has expanded enormously. Today, in addition to books, CDs and films, the range also includes electronics and household items, sports equipment, cosmetics, clothing and even fresh food. You should actually be wondering what you can’t buy on Amazon. All these products are offered by third parties.

However, Amazon also offers its own products, such as the Kindle e-reader and the range of Fire tablets that are very popular with young children. In the US, the company operates from Seattle, but in Europe it has branches in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany. But not only physical products can be ordered via Amazon. Amazon also has a subscription service: Amazon Prime.

What is Amazon Prime?

Prime is an Amazon subscription service that has been around since 2005. It is a subscription for Amazon customers that gives you extra benefits. You enjoy free shipping and unlimited access to exclusive TV series and films via Amazon Prime Video.

Benefits of Amazon Prime:

  • Unlimited free and fast delivery. Free and fast delivery of millions of products without a minimum order amount. Millions of products are delivered the next day and even the same day in selected areas. Great isn’t it? But note: the fast delivery and free delivery only applies to the so-called Prime items. You can recognize these articles by the Prime logo.
  • Benefits for gamers. Prime members benefit from a monthly selection of free games, free in game content and a Twitch channel subscription. With Twitch Prime, you can watch streams without advertising, subscribe to channels for free, and receive discounts on the purchase of games sold on Amazon.
  • Secure, unlimited photo storage. Another advantage of Amazon Prime is that you get unlimited storage of photos, which you can share with others. Amazon has a free app to view your photos on all your devices. As a Prime member, you also get 5 GB of free video storage as standard and you can share the unlimited storage space with up to 5 people.
  • Watch unlimited videos with Prime Video. Last but not least: Amazon Prime Video. As a Prime member you stream popular movies and TV series for free via your TV, tablet, smartphone or via the browser. You can watch the movies and series online or offline. You also have access to “Amazon Originals”: TV series such as The Grand Tour, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Boys and Fleabag.

Is it worth it?

I have a Prime annual subscription on Amazon because I frequently buy books, CDs and DVDs via Amazon and for that reason alone I recoup the costs of my annual subscription with the free shipping costs. In addition, Amazon’s series and film offer are interesting to me in addition to my Netflix subscription. But now I have to come to the conclusion that the exclusive series and films praised by Amazon itself make me very disappointed compared to Netflix. Netflix just has a much stronger range of quality series and movies. Unfortunately, I also think that Amazon does not update its offers very often. I have already considered canceling my annual subscription a few times, but the benefits of free shipping, guaranteed delivery within 1 business day, low costs and perhaps vain hope for a better series and film offer, have so far made me decide not to cancel. So yes, Amazon Prime is worth it to me despite the drawbacks.
